What is Barleymilk?

What is Rejuvenated Barley?

Spent barley is the fiber and protein byproduct of beer brewing. Billions of pounds are produced each year, and it typically either goes to waste or is fed to livestock. Instead of going to waste, we transform the protein into nourishing food for you to enjoy. Hence the name, “rejuvenated barley.” It’s better for you and less harmful to the planet.

How much barley am I helping save by purchasing a bottle?

We're still crunching the numbers, but we can tell you we're committed to saving as much barley as possible with these milks, and future products.

Where is Take Two based?

Take Two is based in Portland, Oregon.

What’s the difference between the Chef’s Blend and Original Barleymilks?

Our Chef’s Blend and Original Barleymilks are similar, with two key differences. Our Chef’s Blend was formulated with higher levels (3% to be exact) of ‘good’ fats — for extra creaminess in your kitchen creations and foaming in your hot beverages. Our Original Barleymilk has less fat and is higher in fiber. It works great in cereal, coffee, smoothies, cooking, or drinking straight from the bottle.

Why do you use pea protein?

Pea protein is one of the most sustainable plant protein sources available, with a small environmental footprint that requires less land and water than dairy and almonds. Combined with barley protein, it creates a complete protein made up of essential amino acids.

Why do you use chicory root?

Chicory root is a source of prebiotic fiber, which helps promote good digestion by feeding healthy bacteria in the gut. Each 8 oz serving of our milks provides 3 grams of this remarkable fiber.

Why do you add oil to your products?

We add organic sunflower oil to our Barleymilk to help us achieve the desired nutritional fat content and texture for our products. Learn more about our ingredients here.

Why did you choose sunflower oil?

Sunflower oil provides a great balance of taste, nutritional, and sustainability. Sunflower is a remarkable plant that combines a combination of ‘good’ fats, trace minerals, and flavor.

Where does the sugar in your Barleymilk come from?

The sugar in our Barleymilk comes from organic cane sugar. Our Vanilla and Chocolate barleymilks contain at least 60% less sugar than other flavored milks.* Our Vanilla Barleymilk contains 9 grams of organic cane sugar. Our Chocolate Barleymilk contains 14 grams of organic cane sugar.

* 1 cup of chocolate milk contains 25g of sugar vs. 1 cup of Take Two Chocolate Milk contains 14g of sugar. 1 cup of vanilla milk contains 25g of sugar vs. 1 cup of Take Two Vanilla Milk contains 9g of sugar. Why do you fortify your Barleymilk with added vitamins and minerals?

We fortify Take Two Barleymilk with vitamins and minerals because we want to offer a delicious dairy alternative that is also nutritionally balanced. We add calcium, potassium, and vitamin D.

How should I store Take Two?

Our bottles should always be refrigerated and consumed by the best by date. Once you open a bottle, we recommend that you refrigerate it and drink it within a week for the best taste.

Is your packaging recyclable? What is it made from?

Take Two is packaged in 100% recycled PET bottles, one of the most recycled plastics in the world. Our bottles are recyclable — so please recycle. This lightweight, food safe material is very energy efficient, contributing to Take Two's mission to rejuvenate human and planetary health through sustainability.

Did you know that only 8% of plastic is recycled? We can all contribute to a better future by making sure our plastics are recycled and reused versus thrown in the waste bin.

Why aren’t your products organic?

Rejuvenating spent barley is a new technology and the rejuvenated barley ingredient is currently not Certified Organic. Our products are free of GMOs and we are committed to sourcing organic whenever possible. We are working closely with our barley supplier to obtain organic certification and will keep you posted!

No, Take Two products do not contain GMOs. We are committed to using only GMO Free ingredients. Rejuvenating spent barley is a new technology and the rejuvenated barley ingredient is currently not Non-GMO Certified. We are working closely with our barley supplier to obtain Non-GMO certification and will keep you posted!

Are Take Two products vegan?

Absolutely! Our products are 100% plant-based, dairy free, and vegan.

I am allergic to nuts, peanuts, dairy, gluten and/or eggs. Are your products safe for me to consume? Is there a risk of cross-contamination?

Our products are 100% nut, peanut, dairy, egg, and soy free. Our products are tested at multiple stages of production to ensure there has been no cross-contamination during production or packing. While we trust our testing procedures to make sure that our products are free of top allergens, the facilities that we use to make our products do have some of these allergens present. The facility that packages our barleymilks also packages products that contain dairy, almonds, cashews, macadamia nuts, wheat, and soy, and these allergens could possibly be present on the same production line as Take Two.

Our products contain coconut and gluten (from barley).

Why did you choose to include coconut in your milks? I’m allergic to coconut!

We included high-quality, plant-based fats in our Barleymilk in order to give our products their creaminess and the best possible nutrition profile. Coconut cream and organic sunflower oil provide an ideal blend of saturated and unsaturated fats, with a neutral taste that allows our barley to shine through.
